Henry is a kid who comes off much older than he actually is. His hobbies and interests mainly reflect that of an adult: he’s good at school, he likes reading, working on computers and practicing Tai Chi. Both hobbies reflect his father, Janyuu, whom Henry easily connects to the most in his family. With his little sister Suzie and partner Terriermon all but glued to the hip, Henry exhibits a big brother role that, more often than not, is reflected in his friendships. He’s a mediator, even-tempered and usually the sole voice of reason between Takato’s childishness and Rika’s stubbornness.
Along with his high intelligence, Henry does the most thinking and philosophizing. Henry is first to question the reason behind the Digimon coming to their world and spends a great deal of time just pondering over it. If no one has an answer, he will go looking for one, pulling all his resources to find some sort of answer. This does make him the first person to go to if someone else has a problem, namely Takato having a problem with Guilmon in the middle of the night. In battle, he’s easily the best strategist, thinking up card combos on the spot and utilizing his surroundings to great effect.
That is when he does battle. Something incredibly easy to notice about Henry is that he is very much a pacifist. Yes, he allows Terriermon to battle, but only as a last resort and if people are in danger. And Henry’s big-brother-over-protective streak doesn’t help the matter, leading many to think Henry babies Terriermon, which is only half true. He doesn’t like making Terriermon fight because of his partner is hurt in any way, it is Henry’s own fault for not taking better care of him. But also it’s an issue with Henry’s own past as well: when he was younger, Henry wanted to assert himself as a strong brother for Suzie. He worked in school harder and developed a very brief bullying phase, quickly ending after he ended up hurting another kid. Henry wanted to be perceived as strong and capable, but learning a price would come at the expense of someone else led to a brief moment of clarity for Henry, a moment repeated later in his meeting with Terriermon.
Henry met Terriermon through the computer version of Digimon, where he leveled up the little guy by defeating other Digimon. Most other kids would just keep at the grind and never think twice about their actions, but Henry instead ended up projecting at the game. When Terriermon got really badly hurt in a fight, Henry’s guilt took a sudden spike, thinking back on his past experience, and his wish to make things right with Terriermon ended with him getting a Blue Card and bringing Terriermon into the real world. Terriermon was now real, he was family. And so Henry had an obligation to protect him. Henry expects upmost perfection in himself, even when a situation is far beyond his own control.
Not to say Henry isn’t a kid because he still is one. He’s openly friendly and compassionate, easy to make friends without being all that outgoing. He likes the Digimon franchise as much as the next boy, enjoying the video games more but still fairly good at the card game. He’s even capable of cracking a joke or two, though nowhere near as bad as Terriermon. And like any older brother, his patience can run out and he will snap back. His outbursts are far and few between, and he is very remorseful after the fact.
